Representative scenario — a composite of common engagements, not a specific client.

A subcontractor won a spot on a larger program and then hit an unexpected gate: the prime sent a lengthy security questionnaire — dozens of questions spanning NIST SP 800-171, incident reporting, and evidence of their program — with a two-week turnaround. No one on staff owned security, and the contract could not move until the questionnaire was answered credibly.

The challenge

Primes increasingly vet their subs’ security before flow-down, and a weak or evasive questionnaire response can stall or sink an award. But the subcontractor had no CISO, no time to hire one, and no appetite to guess at answers a prime’s security team would see straight through.

What we did

We stepped in as a fractional vCISO. We answered the questionnaire truthfully — mapping each question to what was actually in place, marking gaps as planned-with-dates rather than overstating, and attaching the evidence that existed. Where the honest answer was ‘not yet,’ we paired it with a concrete milestone. Then we owned the follow-up dialogue with the prime’s security team.

The outcome

The questionnaire came back credible rather than inflated, and the prime kept the award moving. Just as important, the subcontractor walked away with a security owner on call and a roadmap that turned the questionnaire’s gaps into their next quarter of work — instead of a one-time scramble they would repeat on the next bid.
